The Pope's Christmas Eve Homily ended by importuning his minions to give up reason, be humble, and be "made simple."
It seems to me that a deeper truth is revealed here, which should touch our hearts on this holy night: if we want to find the God who appeared as a child, then we must dismount from the high horse of our "enlightened" reason. We must set aside our false certainties, our intellectual pride, which prevents us from recognizing God's closeness. We must follow the interior path of Saint Francis—the path leading to that ultimate outward and inward simplicity which enables the heart to see. We must bend down, spiritually we must as it were go on foot, in order to pass through the portal of faith and encounter the God who is so different from our prejudices and opinions the God who conceals himself in the humility of a newborn baby.

Although you wouldn't know it from people like this, not ALL religious people embrace willful ignorance - but far too many of them do. It's laughable. "Don't think too much, because if you use logic, you might realize we're screwing you over and lying to you."
There's one 'viner who quite often, when he's proven wrong about some fact or other, spouts off the scripture that he interprets to say he's supposed to remain ignorant, otherwise he's a fool. I guess he has more in common with the Catholics than he'd like to admit.

Heh, I bet you do! Missed ya, btw.
I guess my Catholic Church wasn't a good one - we were never asked to give up thinking. Well, we were in a way, I guess - we stopped going because my parents weren't going to be hypocrites but weren't having more kids. I also know plenty of Catholics who say they had good science classes in private Catholic school. I think most of the Catholic Churches I'm aware of are ignoring this part of the Pope's teaching. I can only hope so.

* snort * just wondering what the judgmental among us think when they see YOUR avatar; I don't think Paul would have approved. King Dave will probably faint in shock. He's not very tolerant of things that would piss off Paul. ;)
And now, sorry for the derail, King Dave - to get back on topic, does the Pope really have any relevance in this day and age to most Catholics? Does anyone really think he's the living representation of God, any more than the Japanese now think their Emperor is divine?

The Pope asks Catholics to be stupid
The Pope was not asking, he was only making an observation.
As for the avatar, live in South West Florida. Like the religious others are under a similar illusion, they look much better the less they wear.

Choose faith over thinking. Sounds like something the Pope would say.

Yeeaahhh ... when they say ga ga ga, what they're really trying to say is god god god. Dumb yourselves down to infantile thought. Oh Catholics, how do you live with this burden?
