Christopher Hitchens—the incomparable critic, masterful rhetorician, fiery wit, and fearless bon vivant—died today at the age of 62. Hitchens was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in the spring of 2010, just after the publication of his memoir, Hitch-22, and began chemotherapy soon after. His matchless prose has appeared in Vanity Fair since 1992, when he was named contributing editor.

“My chief consolation in this year of living dyingly has been the presence of friends,” he wrote in the June 2011 issue. He died in their presence, too, at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. May his 62 years of living, well, so livingly console the many of us who will miss him dearly.

For a lot of people, their first love is what they'll always remember. For me it's always been the first hate, and I think that hatred, though it provides often rather junky energy, is a terrific way of getting you out of bed in the morning and keeping you going. If you don't let it get out of hand, it can be canalized into writing. In this country where people love to be nonjudgmental when they can be, which translates as, on the whole, lenient, there are an awful lot of bubble reputations floating around that one wouldn't be doing one's job if one didn't itch to prick. ~ Christopher Hitchens

Rest in Peace

I liked Christopher Hitchens, even though his devotion to aggressive atheism was little more than a divisive force in this world. He was supremely witty with a dismissive comeback to his foes, few of which could match his encyclopedic knowledge of so many issues. And there is both entertainment and educational value in listening to Hitchens or reading one of his many articles or books.

By the way, all of you atheists and other Hitchens admirers who might think this a fine time to say RIP, think twice. Hitchens would not have approved. RIP is the abbreviation of a CATHOLIC 'prayer' in Latin , Requiescat In Pace.
