Religious fanaticism is an early warning sign of mental degradation. Religion's absurd beliefs are counterintuitive to commonsense, do not make for good neighbors or a good conscience.

The article doesn't make it clear that religion is involved. It says this took place in Utah. So are you thinking that they were Mormons. If they are Mormons, which commandment of Mormonism are they following that makes this a sign of mental degradation?
Rank, the story is well-known, whether this article discusses all the details or not. The man who abducted Miss Smart felt that he had a specific message from God and was a religious fanatic. Not any particular faith, but his own 'faith'.
I don't think King Dave's comment was aimed at Mormon's particularly. I do think that religion is not one of absurb beliefs-- and, if so, then billions of the world's people are absurb. Christianity is just one form of the many religions practiced all over the world. Fanaticism, be it about religion, political doctrine, or chocolate-- that may be the characteristic of one that is mentally imbalanced.
