Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee has been branded 'Governor Grinch' after he defied lawmakers and declared that the state would have a 'holiday tree' instead of a 'Christmas tree'.The governor defended his decision by arguing that it is in keeping with the state’s founding in 1636 by religious dissident Roger Williams as a haven for tolerance – where government and religion were kept separate.
Instead of arguing over the blue spruce displayed in the State House, the governor said lawmakers should focus their energy on feeding the poor.

Why are the religious always passing judgement on everyone, and everything, for any reason. I'm baffled by the Christians contempt for Santa? I mean, Santa is fat, he's white, preforms magic, charity and even looks like a more mature Jesus. Just without all the blood and torture, that's a good thing, better for the kids.

What do trees have to do with the imagined birth of christ? If anything the trees are more a remnant of the pagan roots of the celebration of the winter solstice which the church co opted in order to attract followers. Chafee may well be the smartest, and most honest gov. crappy rhode island ever had.

"Crappy" Rhode Island is the gay capital of the U.S. There is a joke there somewhere.

Well, it's not, and the "joke " is (I think) much closer to home. "king"
ROFL I'm picturing my father back in RI blowing a gasket over this!! He gets all annoyed when anyone says "Happy Holidays" As if Christmas is the only holiday in December! I put up a tree for the solstice. It is a tradition that predates "Christmas" and will probably outlive it too.
Way to go Chafee!

And I'm getting grief from Christians when I mention the problems religious beliefs entail. Sheesh!
They'll feel better once it comes time for the Easter Bunny.
