Father Gabriel Amorth has carried out more than 70,000 exorcisms in his capacity as Chief Exorcist at the Vatican.
The 85-year-old can boast 25 years in the post after being appointed by the late Pope John Paul II.At a conference today, he surprised the delegates by revealing some of his greatest dislikes - yoga and Harry Potter.Father Amorth, a colourful and often outspoken personality, said:'Practising yoga brings evil as does reading Harry Potter. They may both seem innocuous but they both deal with magic and that leads to evil.' He added:'Yoga is the Devil's work. You thing you are doing it for stretching your mind and body but it leads to Hinduism. All these oriental religions are based on the false belief of reincarnation.'

Where do we begin with this lunatic?

"Love thy enemies as thy self" ~ Jesus Christ

"Unless those little ba$tards are doing yoga and reading a book other than the bible."

If Yoga is from Satan, then he has done far more for humankind than god ever did!

Plus, isn't expelling "evil spirits" from people magic???

How is Chief Exorcist Amorth not loving his enemies?

Remember, loving thy enemies also means admonishing sin.

After Christ admonished the Pharisees for condemning the woman caught in adultery, he spoke to her and commanded her also to 'sin no more'. God is merciful and just.

Father Amorth is simply warning people of practices that can open up pathways for evil to enter.

He also said Hitler was possessed by the devil. Who can deny that? Hitler was involved in occult practices as well.

Who can deny that evil exists? Where do you think evil comes from?

Evil comes from brain chemistry, upbringing, and other things - but certainly not from demons.

Hitler wasn't possessed by the devil, no matter what this nutcase priest wants to say. And occult practices aren't necessarily evil - just ask any Wiccan.

Who can deny that evil exists?

    Anyone with half a brain!

Where do you think evil comes from?

From an individual themself, and probably based on circumstances that katrix pointed out above.

    God is merciful and just.

Is that why he practiced genocide?

He also said Hitler was possessed by the devil. Who can deny that?

Anyone who is logical and rational enough to require proof of such a claim when someone makes such an outlandish accusation.

Hitler was involved in occult practices as well.

Does that mean occult practices are inherently or automatically evil or wrong? Correlation does not imply causation!

Yoga helps to maintain fitness without any medicines, it is scientific.

He makes Hinduism sound like a disease - I guess to him, it is. I wonder if he's ever stopped to think about the reincarnation in his own religion, since he thinks reincarnation is a false belief.

70,000 exorcisms - he really sounds as if he needs mental help. I thought the church had given up on the idea of possession a while ago. How sad that they haven't, and that they still don't have a clue about mental illness.

There is a distinct difference between mental health issues and cases of actual demonic possession. If you study the cases, and objective-minded scientists have, a person who is possessed by the devil exhibits unnatural abilities- psychological abilities (knowledge of things seemingly unknown to them, speaking in languages they have not studied, etc), physical abilities (bodily contortions, etc), and other unexplainable phenomena.

Scientists and medical professionals have been known to seek out the help of exorcists when all other natural and known remedies fail.

The Church will not give up on the idea of demonic possession because the devil exists- and Jesus Himself, and his apostles cast out demons routinely.

Yes...the first is real and the second is imaginary. No respected scientist believes in such nonsense because there is NO evidence for it. You would have to PROVE demons exist before blaming a person's behavior on them.

And how sad that this dude equates "occult" practices with evil. I'd have to say that earth-based religions, when they follow the "do no harm" tenet, aren't evil at all.

There is a distinct difference between mental health issues and cases of actual demonic possession.

usually, those who report being a victim of demonic possession have mental health issues.

Scientists and medical professionals have been known to seek out the help of exorcists when all other natural and known remedies fail.

Remind me not to call on those "professionals."

There is no confirmed or established case of demonic possession or other such phenomenon, not to mention any evidence, in any credible scientific literature.

The Church will not give up on the idea of demonic possession because the devil exists- and Jesus Himself, and his apostles cast out demons routinely.

The church won't give up the idea of demonic possession because it makes for effective dogma and playing on the fears of the weak minded or guillable. There is no such thing as the devil or demons or other such nonsense. By all means, try to prove otherwise!

You would have to PROVE demons exist before blaming a person's behavior on them.

That's too much work (and thought) required. It's far easier to say the devil/demons/god did it and leave it at that. :D

Personally, I enjoy seeing the Vatican and Catholic Church marginalize itself with such stupidity.

It hastens the collapse and extinction of the bastion of idiots.
