The film is written and directed by Matthew Chapman, an outspoken atheist who says it's Hollywood’s first offering to feature an openly atheist hero in a story about religious conflict. His mission is to help create a more positive image for atheism, which he says is often misunderstood and maligned, for audiences who may otherwise not be exposed to it.
“My hope was to make an emotional appeal,” says. He hopes it’s a “Brokeback Mountain” moment for nonbelievers.
Nominated for best drama at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, "The Ledge" stars Terrence Howard, Liv Tyler, Charlie Hunnam and Patrick Wilson. Despite the all-star cast, one big question around the film is simply whether American audiences will go to an atheist-themed move.
The film is also available via the website SundanceNow.

Well it's not Man of God, Mel Gibson and his bloody version, "The passion of Christ."
But it is far more enlightening, entertaining, and does not require hours of bloody torture to make a point.

First movie about atheism? What about Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, The Hills Have Eyes 2, etc.

And Evil Dead. I'm pretty sure the old lady in the fruit cellar is an atheist.

It’s a story of religion, love and revenge that pits a conservative Christian husband against an atheist who has seduced the religious man’s Christian wife.
Part of this premise is off? How can the "hero" be the guy who seduces the "christian" wife?
Won't conservatives automatically identify with the religious guy and enforce their thinking that the atheist is a wife stealing bastard?
Without seeing the movie that part doesn't make much sense. Is it that one of the actors is "openly" an atheist that makes this different ? I don't see religion played up much in most love triangle movies. I just don't see how attempts at breaking a paradigm that is instilled through brainwashing and constant indoctrination of youth is possible. The fundamentalists will make more noise about this than all the Jewish protests over "the passion...." could approach. Keep in mind these people kill doctors to prove a point.

I had the same impression. However, for the devoutly religious, the husband can mistreat their wife and the wife would never be justified in raising a complaint. A friend of mine told me he went to an Amish community to buy some lumber, and he witnessed an Amish man walking along side his wife. The wife was pushing an overloaded wheelbarrow and struggling to keep it upright, while the husband was carrying nothing but a switch. The wife stumbled and spilled the contents of the wheelbarrow, and the husband whipped her with the switch the whole time she reloaded the wheelbarrow. My friend couldn't believe what he was seeing, so I have no doubt that his recounting of the event was accurate. I suppose in that instance, an atheist "gentleman" would be looked upon favorably by most, should he seduce her away from the ogre husband.

CNN tries to paint atheists as jerks. Or as just another religion. Same thing. I don't care, I say bring back Zeus. Those guys and God girls were way better than Moses and the boys. I know, I've played God Of War, a very religious video game..

Treating a wife as chattel is nothing new in fundamental religions. Go to the website for WEL (Wisconsin Evangelical Lutherans) that Bachmannn belongs to. Prime doctrine is wife obedience.
That could be more inflammatory. Sometimes I don't think non religious or agnostic non practitioners realize how close many christian sects are to the Islamic Taliban etc...
